Career Readiness for Young Adults

Find Direction. Take the Next Step.

A young man doesn’t need his entire future mapped out to start moving forward. He may be looking for his first job, reconsidering a career path, or struggling to stay employed. What matters is understanding where he is now and what will help him take the next step.

At Milestone, career readiness starts with understanding a young man’s interests and strengths, then building the skills to explore opportunities, apply for jobs, and follow through at work. Coaching connects those goals to practical steps he can take himself.

Career Planning That Starts With the Individual

Some young adults have a clear interest but aren’t sure how to pursue it. Others need time to discover what they enjoy and where their strengths could lead.

We work with each participant to explore possible directions. Career assessments can support that process, but the conversation also includes his experiences and what he wants from working life.

Together, we consider questions such as:

  • What kinds of tasks hold his interest?
  • Where has he shown ability or persistence?
  • What work environment could suit him?
  • What experience or training would a particular role require?
  • What is a realistic starting point?

The goal is to give him a direction he can act on. A first job can provide useful experience while he continues learning about his longer-term interests.

If a career path requires further education, our academic support can help him plan for school alongside his career goals.

Prepare for the Application Process

Applying for work can feel unfamiliar, especially when a young adult has limited experience or has faced setbacks. Coaching helps turn the process into manageable steps.

Build a Resume That Reflects His Experience

We help participants recognize what they can bring to an employer and communicate it clearly. A resume might draw on previous work or volunteer experience. For someone seeking a first job, a school project or another meaningful responsibility may provide a starting point.

Participants practice describing their experience accurately and tailoring a resume to the roles they are pursuing. They can also work on cover letters when an application calls for one.

Follow Through on Applications

Finding an opening is only the beginning. Participants practice reading job requirements and completing applications carefully. Coaching also supports keeping track of submissions and responding to employers.

The participant stays involved in the work so he develops a process he can use again.

Practice for Interviews

Interview preparation gives participants an opportunity to explain their strengths and talk through common questions before meeting an employer.

We help them prepare examples from their experience and think about questions they want to ask. We also discuss how to arrive prepared and communicate professionally throughout the interview process.

Participants can develop related communication and preparation skills through skill-building coaching.

Build the Habits Employers Depend On

Getting hired is an important step. Keeping a job requires consistent effort after the first day.

Our job readiness support addresses everyday situations participants may encounter at work:

  • Arriving on time and ready for a shift.
  • Following instructions and asking for clarification.
  • Communicating respectfully with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Receiving feedback and making adjustments.
  • Completing assigned work.
  • Notifying an employer appropriately when a problem affects attendance.

Coaching provides a place to work through difficulties and plan a response. If a participant struggles with feedback or misses a commitment, the focus is on understanding what happened and taking responsibility for the next step.

Explore Internships and Work Experience

An internship or apprenticeship may help a young adult understand a field before making a larger commitment. It can also give him experience with workplace expectations.

Milestone discusses internship and apprenticeship experiences as part of its career development approach. Availability, eligibility, and any established placements should be confirmed with the team. Coaching can also help participants explore suitable opportunities and prepare to apply; a placement is not guaranteed.

Make Employment Part of Everyday Life

A work schedule needs to fit alongside the rest of a young adult’s responsibilities. Participants may need help planning transportation or allowing enough time to get ready. They also need to keep up with responsibilities at home and protect time for rest.

Within Milestone’s residential setting, coaching helps participants connect these daily decisions to their employment goals. They can review what is working and adjust when a schedule becomes difficult to manage.

Broader routines, time management, and personal responsibility connect with Milestone’s life skills coaching. See what daily life looks like in the residential setting. [Update these two links to the dedicated Life Skills and Daily Life pages once published.]
